Hi, I am replacing the timing gears on my 1986 E150 4.9L engine. The camshaft gear is made of a plastic composite and several teeth broke. The smaller crankshaft gear is steel but there are no threaded holes to pull it and no clearance behind it to grab it with a puller. Is it necessary to replace the steel gear? The motor has been rebuilt, new timing gears were installed and only has 38,0000 miles.

I didn't want to replace it with the plastic gear but if I can't get it off I'll have to. There is almost no clearance behind the gear.
Is there anything I need to worry about before I take the gears off, like align the timing marks?
The Haynes manual says to check camshaft endplay before removing gears. Also not to turn cam or crank when gears are off. Unless this is an emergency repair, you really should try to get a service manual to guide you thru this.
