While I agree with potential safety concerns, I wonder how many cops you or anyone of else we want to dedicate to this issue. IMHO, an officer's time is better spent elsewhere. Maybe if that task was given to meter maids, I would buy in. But to me this is just another law passed to distract us from real crime.
Well that's just a bit paranoid and most likely not the intent at all. When the issue of bumper height and smaller imported cars came to light crime was no where near as crazy as it is these days. There was no government conspiracy to distract people---laws were intended to stop bumpers from crashing into drivers heads and/or upper bodies.
I wouldn't be against vehicles out of compliance with some laws being cited by "meter maids" or during other traffic infraction police interactions. At this point in time in most cities this isn't a huge issue for a lot of reasons but it still needs to be addressed when/if some wrench-happy dimwit modifies something that impacts others safety.
I guess I see this like cell phones while driving laws; all feel good stuff, and nothing changes. But some politicians will point to the law and declare they have solved a problem.
Distracted driving has existed since the auto was invented. It doesn't matter if it is a cell phone, kids fighting, the baby barfing, eating, or grooming, they all reduce a driver's ability.
In the last ten years or so, I have been rear ended by 7 different drivers all of which either had no insurance, no license, or both. Texas requires both to drive legally, but it didn't stop them. Oh, and as an added bonus, not one was arrested, cited, or anything. Admittedly, two were given tickets for causing the accident.
The sad thing is, I know why the cops didn't do anything: whatever they did, would have no effect. The driver would get a ticket, not show up for court maybe have a bench warrant issued, maybe get caught again, and not show up...apply, rince, repeat.
Well the days of " Carolina Squat" in North Carolina are over......New law goes into effect this week. No more than 4 inches difference in front and rear. Sad isn't it!
I was pretty happy.
Damn dangerous on highways, rolling along behind me as we approach the next stop, intersection, hazard, etc.
