ATF vs 75W-90 ?

ATF vs 75W-90 ?
I have an 87’ BroncoII with a manual five-speed transmission. I have been told that this particular transmission requires a combination of both ATF and gear oil, like regular 75W-90? Could this be correct? All of the documentation for the transmission leans toward the standard 75W-90 gear oil, but in very cold weather the transmission is almost impossible to shift into first gear. After the vehicle is warm then it will shift as usual. Any comments or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

What kind of transmission you have - Mitsubishi or Mazda?
If Mitsubishi - then 75W-90 syntetic - that's great (need at least 80W)
If Mazda - then ATF as it's.
I have Mitsubishi 5-speed/ Previous ovner put on it ATF. After changing it to the 75W-90 - work like clock!
