I took my wife's Infiniti suv in to the dealer to have the software upgraded to use wireless CarPlay. It's awesome.
Made me wonder if Ford will do this any time soon? Nothing was changed in her suv just a software update that took about 45 minutes. They sent a letter out and offered it as a complimentary service.
Makes me think the capability is there for Ford as well?
Have to have the wifi enabled to have wireless carplay.
I believe that you need to have wifi enabled, but that doesn't mean you need to pay for a subscription. At least I don't pay for anything in an Audi that we have. Wireless CarPlay is great though. It's amazing how lazy we can be by not wanting to plug in the phone .
I had a rental F150 last month with Wireless CarPlay, it drove me nuts to the point I stopped using it. I am not sure if was me not understanding it, or the way it was setup.
1 Eveytime I started the truck it went to CarPlay weather I wanted to use it or not.
2 When I tried to stop using it it would pop back up
3 It kept overriding the radio station I was listening to with IHeart radio
When I would switch it off it would come back on by itself. So I finally turned it off and went backed to wired.
I am pretty sure the 2021 and lowers do not support it because the hardware is not there. If I am not mistaken it uses Bluetooth for the connection. The older Sync system does not have the bandwidth to support the wireless CarPlay.
my carplay is still problematic, doesn't always hook up. And now for some reason the screen always defaults to the factory navigation, which I never use....
I bought a small plug in for the 2021 F250. Plugs into the USB port in the dash. Enables wireless carplay for both our phones. We're still learning to use it. Sometimes it seems to do what it wants but there are ways around that.
Not trying to say it's better than anything else, but it works to get maps, music off the phone, etc. without having to have the phone plugged in all the time.
All 22's now have wireless carplay and android auto if it has SYNC 3 or 4.
And, yes, it is insidious, automatically starts at every key cycle, and goes to the last media you were using when the key was cycled off.
It uses the bluetooth to connect, but, no, I don't believe it can be added to older models by just a software update.
If you don't want it to automatically start when you start the truck, you will have to turn the app off or turn the bluetooth off.
What always gets me on mine, is when it automatically starts and I've had some other media playing at a high volume level, then whatever I was last playing on my phone like iheart radio, it blasts me and any passengers out of the truck.
In my ‘22 with sync 4, you use the wifi, not Bluetooth for Apple car play. It connects to wifi named “Pro….” something I believe. You can turn off this auto connect feature by going into your wifi on your phone, select the little icon next to the wifi name and turn off “auto join”.
You won’t know it’s technically on wifi as the wifi signal bars don’t actually show, your normal cell signal shows. Even the wifi connection says it’s “low data” only, meaning just to connect Apple car play.
If you want to use the in-truck wifi, you have to connect to it via that wifi connections and disconnect the Apple car play.

I am pretty sure I had my WiFi turned off for most of the time I had that rental. I leave it off when ever I travel. I will have to check next time I get one that does wireless
I have wireless carplay on my 2000....... and LOVE it (both carplay and the wireless sensor). I will have it on my new truck from the factory! I am one of those guys that doesnt listen to local radio and I usually have Waze up when travelling any kind of distance. I love the new screen where you can have maps up and show what your listening to on the right lower side.
