Timing gear replacement

Hi. I have a 1986 E150, 4.9L engine. I had the engine rebuilt 4+ years ago. 38,000 miles now on the rebuilt engine. Several teeth on the fiber camshaft gear (larger gear) broke. The smaller steel gear is good. Do I need to replace both gears? Is there a better alternative to the fiber gear-- aluminum or steel? Although I read that steel gears are noisy. Also; When I took the timing gear cover off, it is very clean inside, no oil and the gears have no oil on them. Shouldn't they be oil lubricated? None of the broken fiber teeth were inside the cover either. Any tips on getting the gears off and on? Do I need to flush the oil system? If so, how is that done?

Myself I'd deal with a bit of "noise" from an all-steel gear set over one of those POS fiber gear sets. I'm sure Cloyes etc etc have all steel gear sets fitting your engine. I've had two GM vehicles with failed timing gears but they were of the later 70's vintage. Those gears had nylon teeth which would wear away and the engine jump time.
