I have many plans for my truck like a modern frame and a cummins swap for the extremes. I know this has been discussed many times both in the dentside and bumpside sections and hoping to answer many questions as I can. Now unfortunately those plans are put on hold as I build my shop. This is a complete gut and tried to think of everything I could include during the renovation.
Here is a 2 minute video showing my truck, my shop (although not complete) and, the quality of my workmanship. If you like what you see, the most recent video is also linked below.
Here is my most recent video:
Post some pics, tell us about the build.
Thanks for the feedback I actually appreciate it! I obviously want you to go to my channel as it helps with however Youtube's algorithm works. Do you have Instagram? Follow my Page @BarnBuiltBeaters. I have many pictures up there of what I have already done to my truck. Unfortunately 90% of that is not filmed.
I suppose you can can this an "advertisement" but I know people here have the same passion as I do for these trucks and figured I can get people to take a look. I want to be upfront that, right now, the channel is not about the truck since the shop has to be built. I hope that makes sense!
What do you want to know about the build I am ALWAYs happy to talk about it and share some pictures! I'll share a few and a simple run down of my plans.
Youtube doesn't pay anything until you hit its requirements. Yes I have Amazon Affiliate links where I potentially may make a dollar or two. I film this because I want to share my build, shop and, any other projects I have going on. Receiving any money is just a plus. My dream would be that Youtube pays for my expensive hobby.
This is the day I bought my truck about 6 years ago. A 1978 F250 400ci C6 auto full time 4x4. It was a one owner truck. The old man's daughter didnt want it. The guy was crying as he was selling it to me since it was his grandfathers and had been passed down. He received a higher offer but wanted to sell it to me since he new I wanted to restore it rather than use it as a work truck which ultimately would have probably been scrapped eventually. I have tried very hard to find him again but never had any luck. I wish he new how much joy, and frusteration ahah, this truck has given me.
I traded work with my professor in college and he let me park tear my engine out and apart to rebuilt it. Funny thing is, he actually had nearly the identical truck! Our school had an engine machine shop so everything was gone through. Unfortunately since I was not in this class I was unable to do this myself but watched along as it was done. I honed the cylinders out .030" over, used Tim meyer's pistons (approx 9.3:1 i believe), a bigger cam (cant remember specs now), Dual Plane, 4 barrel Holley Carb, port and polished heads. The only thing I reused was the block, crank, rods, and oil pan. I think both performance and appearance wise it turned out well.
I lived in Detroit for a while so this was a snap outside the house I was renting. Just some traction bars, wheels and, tires. I like to think the bullet wheels, although modern design, still keep a classic look.
Another big project. The bed on my truck could probably have been saved but I figured the time and the energy spent doing so was not worth while. I ended up buying every replacement panel LMC makes and I build I brand new bed. Would I do it again? probably not. The panels fit together terribly and took a lot of rework. In the end it turned out absolutely amazing. I couldn't have done this if it wasn't for my best bud. He has worked in his family's paint shop being one of the lead painters since he was little.
A picture of the paint before it was mixed. Any Guesses?
Selenite Grey from Mercedes. I remember picking this color out. I walked around the body shop looking at the grey cars. Ford truck, loved the color but the flake was too big. Jeep Grand Cherokee, flake was perfect but the color was a bit too dark. My buddy then hands me a book FULL of any grey you can imagine. I felt overwhelmed... How would i know if these 1"X1" squares of colors would look good on my truck. Then someone mentioned a Mercedes out back they remembered being Grey. This was PERFECT a beautiful grey with the right sized flake in it. Luckily it was on a larger Merc SUV so I was Confident it would look good on the truck too. My buddy shot it and it turned out amazing. a skill I want to learn just not on something so important to me.
I was not a fan of Detroit and found a job elsewhere. This was my truck 2 days before I moved.
My friends and I did a blend between Grand Tour/Top Gear and Roadkill. The plan was for my buddy to take his 81 Camaro and my other friend (The painter from before) his 1966 F100. Unfortunately the F100 didn't come along so he road with me. Detroit to Nashville and Nashville to Detroit fix our "Junk" as it broke down, which luckily was very little.
When I got back the first time I drove my truck again, the starter sounded terrible and wouldn't turn the engine over. I troubleshot a lot until eventually it was just time to pull the engine. I had an opportunity to sell this engine and did so as I got a really good offer and had always dreamed of putting a diesel in here (I'll explain further down this post)

So the Diesel... Originally I wanted to keep it Ford with a Powerstroke but my buddy was selling this 12V cummins and I got a pretty good deal on it. He told me exactly what was wrong with it and well this is for the future! A 12V is pretty cool and im not upset it isn't a "Ford" product.
Here are the few parts I have bought for it. In the background is one of the turbos, an S475. I will be doing a compound setup to get both low end and high end power. Then the head. This thing is an absolute beast. I got an AMAZING deal on this saving nearly 1.5g. This is a pretty serious street head a stage 3 head to be exact. it is an aftermarket casting which flows much better than stock, is ported both intake and exhaust (intake is bowl work), and is thicker to reduce warpage. both of these Items and the valve covers and injection lines I Cerakoted in high temp "paint". This is the color combo for my engine.
Then the other amazing deal. I am still not sure how I got so lucky. It is a modern frame swap, a 2018 Ram 2500. So a Dodge/Ram chassis/powertrain with a Ford body. I wiill have to cut in half, weld back together, and make body mounts. There are a few reasons I did this.
1. a Boxed Frame
2. Modern Suspension, 4 corner coils
3. Beefy Axles for the torque the Cummins will generate
This is by no means all the work I have done to my truck, just some of the bigger projects and future projects. I have many many many ideas for this truck and honestly I am not sure If I will be able to accomplish them with my knowledge. Some of these include carbon fiber parts that I will be making, a data logging/custom gauge setup, etc. This is trial and error and I am willing to show you all my successes and my failures.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
Figure I'd attach a picture of a carbon fiber part I made. Any Guess as to what it is? The steering column cover right near your knees. This is directly off the mold so some trimming was needed.
This I actually rejected but is the best part I have made to date. I had a small vacuum leak and it ruined the finish in some areas. The gelcoat stuck to part (lack of release agent) and the weave isn't as good as I would have liked. This was only my third attempt at this part (or any part for that matter) and each time was getting better and better results.
Thanks for the compliments I think it'll be pretty rad once it is complete!
