Yet another 4x4 swap thread
I got a free 2002 F150 2wd, 4.2 V6, Supercab short bed XTR truck. It runs and drives really decent besides an exhaust leak, and the frame is solid. I need a beater trail rig, and this truck would be perfect. The swap doesn't have to be clean or perfect, just functional. I'm aware it wouldn't be practical in a lot of cases, but here's why it might be semi practical for me.
- I've got unlimited time and I'm an experienced mechanic (done trans swaps, motor swaps, etc, just never on one of these)
- I've got all the time and tools and space to do it (my own private shop, and plenty of storage)
- It doesn't need to be certified for the road, so it doesn't have to be a clean job
- What components will I need to do the swap? Obviously the transfer case, front diff, some front suspension and some more, but is there any more obscure parts i'd need that are specific to these trucks?
- Is a 2wd and 4x4 frame different? Obviously that'd be a problem that'd put a stop to this.
- Any other major snags that'd stop me from doing this?
- Did these trucks come in manual (floor shift) transfer cases? That'd make my life a lot easier, don't really wanna deal with too many electronics.
- Anything else you feel the need to mention is appreciated as well. I'm aware it's a lot of labour, but I'm fine with that, I have the time and space for a project.
If you just have to have a 4WD 4.2 truck, they are out there. They only come with manual transmission, manual t-case, XL trim only and reg cab short bed or long bed.
