Instrument gages

If anyone can give me some input, it would be appreciated.

65 f100 std. cab. Came across instrument panel at salvage yard with 2-1/16" electrical 'alt, and oil pressure gage', 1 on eash side of of the speedometer. Kind of like the looks over the plain instrument panel. Wondering if possible to splice a lead from the existing idiot lights without creating an electrical issue.

Thanx,
dave

A guage will not replace an idiot light. The guage needs a sending unit, and the wiring to go with it.

Thanks for the input,

The entire wire harness is set out on garage floor. Thought it ideal opportunity to make any additions. However, sounds like it may require level of automotive electrical experience i don't have.

Will continue to research it, but probably easiest route would be to stay with the original plain instrument panel.

Keep it simple

Thanks again for the info.,
dave

The easiest route would be to keep the lights but what does that tell you? That you've had a failure after the fact. Personally, I like gauges.
The oil pressure gauge shouldn't be much of a problem, mostly swapping the oil pressure switch (for a light) on the engine with a sender for a gauge. You'll also need to make sure the power through the gauge is coming from the gauge voltage regulator. Should be the same one that already supplies the fuel gauge.
The ammeter will be a different story, depending on how it was designed to work. Some read the voltage across a shunt. This uses small wires as there isn't a lot of current going through the gauge. Others run the "whole" current load through the gauge through heavy wires. Probably easier to hook up but more potential for problems if there's a bad connection.
As long as you've got it completely out and aren't fumbling around under the dash, I'd seriously consider it.
Just my 2¢

Appreciate the information,

Now encouaged to look into using the gages. From the post, it does'nt appear the oil pressure will be too involved and something i should be able to figure out. The Alternator gage may be another story.

The gages may be shunted. Compared the connections w/ the temp. and fuel gage, currently on instrument cluster, and they appear the same. They have a piece of material between the 2 leads on both gages. Will look into it further.

i have request in to couple wire harness companies, no response yet. Mr. Mustang makes an alternator harness for the 65/66 ford truck. If able to speak to one of their tech's and find the harness is designed to work w/ gages i will put out the $48.

Lastly, i believe their were certain models of the 65/66 trucks that came w/ the gages, the f250 for one. i have a couple automotive books and compile a list, then hit the salvage yard circuit and pull the harness if i find the truck with these features.

Again thank you for the input,
dave
