I was wondering if anyone has any advice, my truck kills batteries when it's not running i am assuming some kind of electrical short is happening somewhere.. my brand new $150 (can) battery is dead. would fix it myself but i dont' know where to start looking or wut i am looking for.. entertaining the idea of just rewiring the whole thing. or having a mechanic at a shop take a look at it... any advice?
You are grounding out somewhere. Check all your connections and wires thoroughly for cracks and such. Also check your voltage regulator, I had one that kept killing my batteries, it was grounding out through it's housing into the rad support. Also do a search for this topic, it was discussed not too long ago, lots of good ideas on where and what to look at.
would it be as simple as replacing the voltage regulator.. because when i bought the truck the guy said it might be kind of sketchy considering he found it sitting on the floor of his shop.. he just threw it in and the truck seemed to run all right..
Yeah, I'd definitely replace it then. Best and easiest place to start without having to crawl all over and under your truck checking wires and grounds.
Is the regulator supposed to be grounded to the truck by it's metal casing?.. it bolts in but the bolts are fairly loose.. no metal for them to grip nothing to thread into
well I got a test light and traced it (quite easily) to the voltage regulator.. i replaced the voltage regulator and gave it a good ground and poof the draw is gone, but when i turn my headlights on i smell burning and see smoke coming from behind the dash what gives? anyone know?
Pull the carpet back and unbolt the dimmer switch, and check the wiring to see if it's melted. If it's ok, pull the headlamp switch out from behind the dash and check the wiring and connector to see if they are melted.
If you have never pulled a headlamp switch out before, disconnect the battery, pull the **** out, and then feel around on top of the switch for a little button. Push down on the button, and the switch ****/shaft should pull out. Then take the switch out of the dash.
actually i just finished putting the dash in, and hadn't yet put the plastic cover over the guage cluster, and the smoke appeared to be coming from that headlight switch that turns the lights on and off.. the RPM's of the engine lowered when i turned the headlights on is it possible the voltage regulator is faulty and not sending power to the battery? is it also possible that i am running a fuse for example say a 20 amp fuse on a 15 amp circuit? causing wires to melt, or is that switch just screwed?
