diagnostic computers

Is there software that you can either download or purchase that will read the diagnostic computer on my ranger, something similar to what they use at the shop. It was my understanding that you can get the input cable and software for a laptop to use at home yourself - rather than pay a mechanic a ton of money to replace a $15 dollar sensor or part.

Where would I go for something like this and how much would it cost if anything?

I think it kinda depends on what year truck you have. Anything from certin 95's on should have the newer diagnostic computer. Otherwise with the EEC-IV (94-and down) you just need a piece of wire and it will flash the check engine light on your dash. I"m not 100% sure on this, but i imagine if they did make any kind of downloadable thing you would need to put a new card in your computer, or the software would cost probably as much as a code reader.
