I live in Alaska and we pretty much go into 4x4 when the first snow comes and stay that way until spring. I tried the "slippery" mode and the "deep snow/sand" mode in my 2021 F-150.. The difference seems to be that slippery mode is kind of easy on the gas and the deep snow mode guns it. Only got about 800 miles on the truck no so I'm sticking with what I know. Normal mode in 4x4.
Ummm - can't run sport mode in Alaska in the winter. Would be a ditch diver for sure. Normal 4hi is it I think.
I have winter too, several feet of snow, and several thousand feet of elevation changes in either direction. I prefer the longer gear holding and holding back of sport or tow mode myself. In normal the truck tends to try to run around in 8-10 gear. Granted I'll drive my other truck or my rubicon unless I just get stuck out in the storm
Our streets are kept pretty clear. What we do have is ice. Snow the plows leave and packed by cars. Icy intersections and icy patches on the road. Roundabouts really suck. Too much torque or speed will put you in the ditch.
I go for what I know. Normal 4 hi is my first go to. Tires mean everything in snow or mud. My stock tires are gone as soon as I can. Only owned the truck 3 weeks.
I'll have to wait and see what it's like when the snow flies. So far we've only had a few flurries in Iowa.
I have played with some of the modes some. I'm not really a fan of tying the 4x4 to the mode on sport and I'd like to be able to switch directly to some modes more easily. I have an '18 Fusion Sport and I love being able to push a button and get sport mode on demand. Having to rotate a **** through a few other options to get to it on the F-150 is annoying. It also doesn't like to do it at times because it's trying to engage 4x4.

The truck shouldn't try to go to 4x4 if you go to the right. If you turn the switch to the left you get all the 4x4 modes slippery first which is 4x4 by default as are the rest. Some are even lo which makes you shift to neutral. The default for normal, tow, eco, then sport is 2wd. All those are to the right. None should try to engage the hubs or tcase. Unless you are already in 4hi. Not sure on trucks with 4a.
I do wish there was a sport button. Or even just tow.

This is from memory...pretty solid on rotating counter clockwise, not so much the other way. I've only had the truck a week or so:
From Normal, rotate counter-clockwise (turn to the left) I get tow-haul, then Eco, then Sport. When I get to sport, it engages 4x4 auto with a pop up saying it's changing to 4x4..
Rotating clockwise : slippery, then deep snow/sand, mud/ruts. Not sure on these as far as 4x4...they're all 4x4, but not sure which. Pretty sure slippery is 4A

Mine doesn't have 4 auto. If it's tied to the sport mode then that's incredibly stupid. IMHO. I understand your concerns. Lol. My xlt 5.0 fx4 has the same going right. Left I just know they are all 4x4. Slippery is first then several others. When I need 4x4 I just hit the 4x4 button myself. Lol. I think the last one (rock) is the only one that defaults to low range.
I had an 04 4runner when I was stationed there for 4 years and don't recall it being overly complicated to drive in the snow. 4x4 and the traction control always did fine. Maybe it's good my '21 XL doesn't have multiple drive modes to deal with.
I just got a 2021 XLT with the 3.5L. I looked through the online manual, or lack thereof. Are there any concerns with shifting between modes while driving at any particular speed? What should I NOT do?
