Maybe, but it sounds more like header leak to me. Or a noisy lifter. Ensure it is not something easy before diving into an engine teardown. But if you have to go down that rabbit hole, another possibility is the wrist pin bushings. Mine sounded similar and that was what mine turned out to be.
for each of the possibilities you mentioned, how important is it that I fix it sooner rather than later? Am i doing long term damage that will ruin the motor or can I continue driving it as is for the time being? My guess would be a noisy lifter.
Header leak you can drive it all day unless you are getting too much exhaust in the cab. I would fully investigate that one first. Make sure you look for cracks as well as bad gaskets. Noisy lifter if it gets bad enough can start to wear on the push rod and/or rocker arm. That one is pretty easy to pop the valve cover and check to see if there are any rockers that have any slack. A wrist pin bushing can eventually get bad enough to damage the rod, but it would sounds way worse before that is an issue. However, a broken piston, AKA piston slap could be damaging the cylinder wall. If you can eliminate the exhaust leak for sure, best to get a mechanical stethoscope and zero in on exactly were the noise is coming from.
i appreciate your knowledge and help this is all good to know. I will investigate a bit and see what I find. I have been fearing pulling the valve covers as they currently do not leak.. dont want to accidentally open up a new beast. I reckon ill get a set of valve covers and gaskets if i end up pulling em to check the lifters.
