I took the old carb from my 54 apart tonight. After 2 days I would have to put gas in the carb to start. So I took it apart and the bowl is bone dry. And there was some dirt in it. I took this carb off last Friday. What do you think?
Clean the grime by spraying with carb cleaner or starting fluid. Take the cast iron base off and put some gas in the float bowl. Cover the top of the carb with cardboard or something to keep the gas from evaporating, then let it sit for a day or two. If there is a leak you should see it. My guess is either the power valve itself or the power valve gasket.
The white stuff looks like some kind of thread sealant that has turned hard.,
I agree on the possible power valve leak. Get a good kit with good parts, not one of the cheap ones. As far as I know, Cowboy John's or Vintage Speed sell the better kits, but there may be others. I wouldn't go to Carquest, Advance, or other box stores.
New gas tank less than a year ago, new hard lines. A glass filter between pump and carb.
The white stuff looks like Teflon tape but I have not used it as it doesn't stand up to gasoline.
The reason I bought a rebuilt carb from Cowboy John was because I believed the carb was losing gas. It would not start after 2 days of not driving it. I knew his rebuilt carb would be better than me rebuilding my old worn carb.
I put gas in the bowl Thursday evening. I filled it to where the bowl gets wider. Here's what it looked like at noon today, Saturday. Most of the gas has drained out. So this winter I'll rebuild it and keep it as a spare since on the truck now is a rebuilt carb I bought from Cowboy John.

That’s exactly what my carb did, leaked right down to the top of the power valve. I bought a PV from Charlie at vintage speed, no more leaky PV.
