The long block itself is same. The E-series has different bolt-on items such as the oil filter housing and such so it would have to be swapped over from the Excursion engine.
So its doable but not a straight forward complete running engine swap like a truck to truck swap.
To add to it, vehicles used in first responder (police, fire and ambulance) type service accumulate A LOT of idle hours in relation to driven mileage. Keep this in mind before making your decision.
I kinda assumed some bolt ons would be different. Glad to know it will work, I find a motor with 98,000 miles on, mine has 262,000 and needs head gasket I believe, I'm debating on either getting the 08 motor for reasonable price and bullet proofing that one and swapping, versus putting 5k in bullet proofing mine and hopefully bottom ends hold up,
I've never understood why Eseries, which include all those ambulances, buses, etc with the idle hours, don't include an hour meter. I don't suppose that hour data can be pulled from the PCM using IDS or something, can it?
Do you have the entire ambulance to salvage? If so, grab the 08 tranny pan too.
Random Eseries question : Why don't they have the harness ground on the back of the intake by the IPR?
Are you yanking the Eseries engine yourself? That's a pain, but a little easier if you're scrapping the ambulance.
If you do have the entire ambulance, I'd buy the PCM, transmission harness, and maybe a few other misc parts from you.
Beware of riser differences between 03 and the other years and of the differences in ICP sensor location and wiring.
The oil pan will be different.
Get rid of the dual alternator setup.
