I don't understand why you would be ticked, I would be happy. Other ways to tell are to look at the dist. They are slightly diff cuz of the diff deck height. Also, the 351 has a wider intake.
LOL, yeah I did say tickled. Okay, I really hate to even ask this as I'm about to show what a dumb@ss I really am. What is the cylinder layout? I mean, which is 1,2,3, etc. I'm not sure how I can not know this but, I don't. I didn't have any luck looking on the block or the valve cover. On my distibuter the only one that is numbered is #1. Feel free to laugh at my ignorance.
Thank you very much. I have got a 351. I'm pretty darn happy right now, especially considering I've got a truck I can't drive at the moment. BUT, it's a truck I can't drive with a 351 in it! LOL.
so are you sure its a head gasket thats blown? if so, i would just replace the gasket for the time being and save so you can stroke that puppy to a 393
Well, I haven't torn into it yet. I'm kinda assuming with the pressurized cooling system and steam out the tailpipe that that's what's wrong with it. So in a nutshell, not really. The only thing that bothered me was no water in the oil which always seems to be the real tell-tale sign. Funny thing, I went out and started it just now and it starts and idles just fine. Did the same thing before to but soon started with the above mentioned symptoms. I thought I probably did some pretty serious damage driving it all the way home the way it was. Now I'm not entirely sure. I think I may be trying to fix a problem I'm not even sure I've got. I suppose the smart thing to do would be to find out what's actually wrong with it before I try to fix it. I definently would like to mend it for the time being and build it right when I have more of a budget to work with. Hmmm...stroked to a 393. I like that idea! Once again, I sure do appreciate the help I've found here. This board and it's members are a great asset to have. --Eric

you lower intake gasket might be bad, how often do you need to add radiator fluid. my old 302 had similar issues. I pulled the plugs and found 5-6-7 had that burned radiator smell but havent pulled it apart yet because i just got the 351 in on saturday. i would pull your plugs so that way you know what side it is at least.

I've added it a couple times but not alot. of course the last time I drove it it got hotter than heII and the radiator fluid had a nasty burned smell and the radiator was about 3/4 empty. Never saw any fluid leaked. the fluid was nasty also, like it had a little bit of burned oil or something in it. When I get home from work tomorrow I plan on pulling the plugs. Forgot my tools today unfortunately.
I hate to be the one to tell you, but more power costs money.....
I wouls ave some dough and really consider getting either a good longblock 302......or a shortblock along with a custom grind camshaft and aftermarket heads and headers.....
I have modded my 5.8 and am totally happy....has good power all over...
and mileage did go up a bit...
I spent a good $4300 on it......but I won't have to tweak with it in another 10-15 years if not more....

Well, I wound up replacing my fuel tank, cleaning my injectors and fuel lines, new fuel filter, new plugs and wires. Found out I did indeed have a blown head gasket so I took the heads in to have them checked and found out that I was missing two exhaust seats. Where they went I don't know, but to rebuild the heads would be $300 or so and remanufactured ones are $250. So I've got remanufactured ones coming in hopefully by Wednesday so I can start putting the poor girl back together again. Hope I don't get any more nasty surprises...I can't afford all this this close to Christmas! --Eric
