okay. So all trucks would do this then correct? Does this need to see the dealer?
Not all. Only some, but I don't know what the percentages are. I have 3 friends with the 2.7, and none of them have this issue.
My 3.5 does not do it either, and being the 1st generation of the 3.5, I know I have the "long" timing chain which is theoretically a bit more prone to something like this.

okay, so no real definitive answer about what it actually is? It’s going into the dealer and I’m just trying to get as much info as I can prior before the ridiculous explanations start coming from them.
Hey - I just had this fixed. It - for me it was a Cam Phaser issue that there is a service bulletin for. I'd already had my truck in for other minor warranty issues when they called and said that they'd heard it, got the parts in and fixed it.....the cam phasers control the variable valve timing....

Reason: needed to add something
The sound is bad. My son in law had the same sound at only 4,000 miles, it was the timing chain in his 2016 2.7. The dealer put bulk 5w20 in the on the first oil change and the problem started within a few hundred miles. He took it in and they replaced the timing chain, guides and cam phasers. It's been perfect for 80k miles now.
I amazes me how many oil change places and even Ford dealers still go with bulk 5w20 in the EcoBoosts.

So did the sound rattle for a minute or so then go away when warmed up? And sound clips?
Does it sound different when you open your hood? The wheel well is just the best sound pathway from the engine compartment when the hood is closed. It may be just the cam phasers with yours. If it doesn't make any sound when accelerating.
At first it almost sounded like some stole your catalytic converter off that side of the exhaust.

I will try with the hood open... If it was the cam phasers, wouldn't the sound always be present? Not gone after warms up?
Not necessarily, they would have full oil pressure going to them. But when the computer tell the phasers to move, they would give a quick rattle for 2 seconds or so. If it was the timing chains the noise would always be present. I asked about opening the hood because you are likely to hear the sound differently that way. Now you say you hear it at the wheel well, but once the hood is open you will likely hear it coming from the top of the engine.
