Speedometer gone wild!

Got the speedometer hooked up a couple of days ago. Took it for a drive out to see my Dad, and it was working well. Later, during my drive back home, the needle started bouncing and slowly climbed up to around 90. (I was going 55). It did this for the first couple of stops when I got back into town, and then started working correctly again. Any idea what would cause that? It was making quite a bit of noise before it corrected itself.

Also, brought home a couple of items that my (late) grandfather had stashed away. I'm going to clean them up and see if I can't make use of them. My Dad swears there's a dual carb flathead intake somewhere around that house, but we haven't found it yet.

Try lubing the speedo head. There is a weep hole in the back of it. But at this stage it might be better to remove the speedo and really lube it up. I used WD-40 on my two speedo heads, and soun it with a Q-tip stuck in my drill. Put the drill in reverse and you can get it up to 60, maybe faster with a power corded drill. Then I dropped light oil in the weep hole.

The dual carb intake will be worth my ore than the mirror and turn signal switch. But they are cool since they belonged to your grandfather.

Thanks. I'll pull the speedo and get it oiled up.

It could also be your cable. Some say to use dry powdered graphite.

Back in my wrenching days we'd use the white Lubriplate assembly lube on speedo cables. We'd pull them from the housing, clean them off with carb or brake clean, stick the end of the cable into the tube of Lubriplate and slide it back in the housing.
Worked like a charm
