OK, I get it now. The new parts from Napa are crap and the original parts are worth rebuilding. Unfortunately, I didn't learn this valuable lesson when my original starter stopped working so I traded it in for the first of a handfull of crappy starters from Napa. I am now contemplating buying a rebuilt original off ebay (https://www.ebay.com/itm/28271684350...0AAOSwzUpgIaJg) but $350 shipped, ouch! I mean, I'll do it 'cause I have to get out of this perpetual circle that is Napa parts but, oof. So I ask you pro's, is this the right way to get out of the aftermarket groundhogs day nightmare? Has anyone done business with BNR parts? Or do you know of another reputable source for original starters? My truck has a 223 in it BTW. Thanks for any advice you feel like giving me!
Red,
I had the opposite issue with my starters. 1966 F250 CS V8, Auto I had 3 "rebuilt" starters fail in less than 5K miles after restore. The parts supplier I bought them from was very good about giving me a replacement. Lifetime warranty. But I got tired of replacing them and bought a new starter from NAPA. Now 3.5 years and 6K miles with no issues. No more cheap rebuilt starters for me.
I don't know what application you have, but the smaller lighter permanent magnet starters work great! They are all basically the same motor just use different nose cones for the different applications. I wanted to keep my truck as period correct as possible, but the reliability of the newer style starters made it the only option for me as I want to be able to hop in and drive cross country any time I feel like it.
