I decided to swap out the toyo AT3 for the defenders.
AT3 had too much road noise and the ride quality wasn’t very good (drove 2k miles and tried several tire pressures).
very happy with the performance of the defenders, and they don’t look as cool, but the bigger tires fill in the wheel well and you can’t hardly tell a difference from a slight distance.
I chose comfort over aesthetics I suppose-happy with them so far.
I agree with you on the comfort. I think these are great tires too. I was just afraid they wouldn’t quite be enough in the occasional sand wash. Truck looks great!
Finally bit on a set of 295/65R20 Nitto Terra Grappler G2s from none other than Walmart, with free shipping, which is no small trick up here in AK. Saved about $900 compared to a local customs shop - and they said they couldn't get 'em for weeks. Considered KO2s, AT IIIs and ST Maxx... but hoping these will scratch the itch for summer driving in the boondocking places we camp. It can be tricky if it rains. I have a set of stock size Cooper studded snows for winter on a set of used factory wheels.
Found them as a link from the Tire Size calculator web site. One caution - the TireSize description says 8"-10" wheels are fine, the Walmart site says 8.5" minimum. While tire stores tend to be picky about mounting something bought elsewhere, and there are no Walmart auto centers near here, there are other shops that will mount, balance and reset TPMS. Didn't really need to pull the trigger right now, but the increasing rarity of tires in this size pushed me. If nothing else, could sell them on CL or something similar for what I paid.
Nice rig. We went with Michelin LTX Defenders 295X65/20 to pull our rig... They are a tad over 35...
What a fun topic. It still baffles my wife that we talk about tires. I’ve ran all the ones mentioned above EXPECT nitto. I’ll wait until every truck at the Lowes pro parking doesn’t have them, then maybe try them out. Currently Toyo AT3’s. 35x12.50x18 on stock wheels. I run dump trailers so much, that I currently have 2 nails slowly letting air escape. Dang it. Nothing like taking a new 2021 to the dump and spinning up diapers and crap into the undercarriage. Lol.
My 20+ year experiment findings:
Safe Bet: BFG A/T Safer Bet that my Dad gets: Michelin stock size quiet highway something something something Best value: WildpeakAT3’s. Good tire, great price. Best wear: Geolander A/T holy smokes 60k miles or more. Best tire to make people think your 25 and go off-roading but you’re really in your 40’s and sometimes drive across the median to feel some adrenaline: Nitto anything. Most forgettable really good tire: toyo open country AT3. (Current setup and bored already) although great load rating. F. 3970@80psi. Most Unforgettable: Mickey Thompson Baja Claw. YES! I can still hear the sound in my head after 23 years. Like an airplane engine flying low. And man do they transform the look of a stock truck. We may have to live those days once again. Although they ride rough and don’t last long and cost a ton. But when you’re 18 those things don’t matter.
Any reports on the amount of stones these tires throw going down a gravel road. The stock michellin's make the ting, ting, ting sound all the way up and down my roads. I even get stones that fly and land on my sunroof and hood. No small feat. My next tire I do not want a stone chucker. I have ran mud tires since 1996 and am not used to giving myself stone chips as the big lugs to not hold stones. I like the looks of the terra grappler G2, however not if they throw stones.......

I go down a gravel road every now and then, and yes, those Michelin's would chuck rocks out for two miles after returning to asphalt. I've only been on the gravel once since the Yokohama's but I didn't notice any chucking. Honestly I didn't realize it until you mentioned it.
I am about to install 295/65/20s on my stock wheels and suspension. From what I read in multiple threads, this size tire will NOT rub. Anyone else care to comment that is running this combination?

No rubbing, and I installed the Ford OE mud flaps and still no issue.
Hoping someone has experience with this. I'd like to level the truck an go with 35's, on the stock wheels. I'm hoping something is out there as quiet as the LTX AT Michelin's that come on the truck. I've looked at Dyna Pro AT 2, TOYO AT3, and my son has Ridge Grapplers. All "quiet" for an AT, but still hum I believe. Crazy thing is Michelin makes an All Season version of the stock AT in a 35, but no AT.
Thanks!
Cooper at3 XLT. quieter then the stock wranglers my truck came with. i'm at 40k miles on these coopers in the 35" flavor. About to go to 37's.
