V10 performance

Looking at upgrading my 2003 f250 Fx4 v10 with 3.75 gears performance. Just of the top of my head
1. Y pipe and tune from 5star
2. Re gear and add detroit trutrac while it's open.
I am running 285/75r16 and may go 35s at some point with a 4"lift. I don't pull my trailer much these days but sometimes pull a 15ft 9-11000# loaded work trailer half a dozen times a yr.
What gear ratio would be a good median for 33s and 35s? My thoughts 4.56.
Looking for feedback on if my plan seams solid or What you would change or add. I am kinda on the fence of leaving it alone or pulling the trigger so I would want a noticeable difference and decent hwy and around town ride.

5 Star tune absolutely.

Have you thought of Headers over the Y-pipe? Since you have the 03 I am suspecting it is a factory T with a lot of restriction.

I have a 99 V10 with SPD Y, 4" Catback, 5 Star tunes and 34" tires. My Exhaust flows to much, should have kept the Ram Horn Y. I prefer the 92 Performance tune, haven't used the 87 performance or tow tunes. I have a set of Doug Thorley Headers on the shelf waiting for install. After that I'm thinking 4.56 gears with my 34" tires should be the sweet spot. 4.56 will put me around a 4.10 effective ratio. A little more power for around town, hauling and towing.

You don't need a 4" lift to clear 35" tires. A leveling kit will suffice.

Thanks. Yes I do have the T design which is the reason for wanting the Y to eliminate the restriction . Glad to hear 4.56 gears are on the right track. When you say you are running 34s what exactly is the size of your tire?

For the 2V V-10 the 4.30 - 4.56 effective gear ratio range is considered the "sweet spot" for much improved unloaded performance and excellent heavy towing ability without too big of a hit to fuel economy.
I run Nitto Duras in 305/70R18 that are a true 35" tire and turn them through 4.88 gears or an effective 4.39 ratio. My stock tire with 3.73 best tank was 15.5 MPG, the best tank with the 35"s and 4.88s is 14.5 MPG unloaded of course, towing improved from 6/7 MPG all highway to 8/9 MPG over the same terrain. All of my driving is done on 5Stars 89 Octane Performance tune and the big wagon has the Banks long tube headers and full flow Y pipe. The EX is our dedicated tow rig for our 12K TT, it no longer sees any unloaded daily driving locally, only unloaded miles at our travel destinations. The gears were the single biggest performance upgrade that I have done for this rig.

I have 295/70R18 E rated Nitto Ridge Grapplers. My truck has ATS X code springs up front to assist clearance. No rubbing.

Best mileage I've had with these tires was a road trip doing 75-80mph which had the rpms around 2-2200.

For occasional heavy towing I would say 4.56. I swapped axles in mine with the v10 from 3.73 to 4.30 with 315 70 17, which is 34.4" and I don't do much heavy towing with any regularity and they are a noticeable improvement over the stock gears but it had way more getup and go when I had 2857017 on when I first swapped axles. I think my effective ratio is around 3.90. 4.56 would put you real close to an effective ratio of 4.30 which the v10 really loves. Don't forget to adjust your speedo, forscan works great for that. I also have banks headers on mine and that also was a noticeable performance improvement. I also did a new cat back with a Jones 3030xl muffler and it sounds sweet, no drone in the cab.
