99 Explorer alignment cost
Took my truck in to have the front end looked at (not a dealer), and the gentleman there reported that to align the front end, it would cost $200 for the special kit that has to be added to allow the truck to be aligned. Am I correct in thinking I am getting smoke blown up my skirt?

If you do, in fact, need an eccentric cam kit, then $150-$200 is the going rate. I would question whether you really need it though. Id take it to a dealer service department and have them do it anyway. Dealers are usually better at aligning without the kit (I had to have mine done 3 times in one sitting to get it right but I didnt need a kit and I was only charged $45). Take it to a dealer. For the cost, you should get a better job anyway.

Sounds like smoke, but maybe not. I bet the tech is referring to a camber/caster kit that allows the alignment to be moved further than stock. It is absolutely necessary in some cases and will provide the only fix. I had one added to my 93XLT and it and the alignment came to $60. Don't know if there would be that big of a difference between models, but I'd check with the dealer or another shop.

Is that kit really needed?
I'm going to work on mine. It can't be those bolts and excentric washes cost $200. My inside tires wear and tires just looks bowed out on the bottom. Pretty sure the stock bolt end plates can be rotated. Unfortunantly mine seem to be at the extreme outward position already.
