computer question (SATAvsIDE RAID)

SATA Raid vs IDE RAID?

Anyone have any opinions/experience? The problem is I dont want to go with 80 gig drives, and SATA starts at 80G (Maxtor is the brand I'll be using regardless) Anyway, I currently have a 30g 7200RPM 8Meg cache WD x 2 raid 0 setup (striped), And I am going to be POSSIBLY going to SATA RAID tonight...(so hopefully someone answers before I pick

Anyway I just am trying to see if the extra bandwidth that the SATA raid is going to have over the IDE raid will make much of a difference? I am going to be upgrading my network to GIGABIT when we move (for me anyway, everyone else is wireless in the house hehe.) And when I do that I am going to build a IDE raid x4 80gig drives in my server, as my server is not "the latest and greatest" but 4x80gig striped drives in my linux box, should suffice for some pretty quick read/writes...

So rather then continue rambling...opinions please?

Thanks,
Chado

Think "buss speed limitations". Just how many MBPS can your mainboard move, in comparison?

If it's not for the speed, then it is for the redundancy?

How's that for something to think about Chado??

Redundancy isn't an issue, I'm not going to run mirror'd RAID's. As I dont feel the need to secure my 3500 song mp3 collection, and all my school doc's are backed up on cds (that are important anyway)

So basically it comes down to raw speed...I just want to know if anyone has notice dan actual difference.

What is the price difference? I think the speeds would be too close to call, and you can save a few bucks with the IDE RAID and buy truck parts.

I went with IDE raid if anyone is interested.

The problem with SATA was that the smallest drive I could get was 80G, the prices were close, and if I wanted a 160G array I would of gone that route. However I dont. LOL.

I went with 2x40G WD IDE 7200RPM 8MEG cache...

Fast...yes...fast as SATA? Well the 80G drives make it slower then the 40G drives...small is better sometimes lol.
