have 65 f100 std cab w/ metal instrument panel. Want to repaint the surface but not sure how to remove the gages. There is an alt. and oil pressure gage about 2 1/4" dia. on each side of speedometer.
It appears you have to pry the chrome face rings off to get the gages out. Fearful may damage if incorrect, so thought before taking screw driver to it would check and see if anyone has done it.
Good question. I just got finished doing my '65 Custom Cab instrument panel, and on it you could push the face rings off from the backside of the plastic. I'm not sure about the metal one, though, however this is a great site-I'm sure lots will "chime in."
Have you looked at the back of the cluster? I'll bet you'll find some type of retainer on each guage and after you remove it, the whole guage will slide out. I wouldn't pry or try to pop it out until you've checked the back. You should be able to remove the screws on the dash and tilt the cluster towards you.
