So I'm hoping I'm not being redundant here but I need some help and I'm turning to you all with your tons of experience.
Did motor swap on a 77 f150, put in 460, now am having timing issues.
I can get it to 30° but it runs like crap.
I've checked my firing order and it's set at 15426378 according to what I've read.
I've got people telling me about a valve spout that needs to be undone to set base timing and I've tried and it just continues to jump.
any help, tips suggestions is appreciated
You need to unhook your vacuum advance to set your initial. but what's really important is your total timing all in at 2500 - 3000 rpm , is this where you're getting 30 ?
It would be best to hook your vacuum advance up to ported vacuum for the time being anyway. if you want to go to manifold you can deal with that later.
And while 460's are not known for this problem the way that the Windsor family of engines are, did you verify that your engine's TDC and the timing marks on the damper ring were accurate? If they're off you would just be getting incorrect readings and not really know where your timing is happening.
Did you build the 460 yourself? Or was it bought as a new/rebuilt engine, or maybe even was just installed as-is used?
Is this a carbureted engine, or EFI?
The next thing I might suspect in either case would be a weak ignition spark? What system are you using?
First off sorry it took me this long to respond, u couldn't figure out how to get back lol,, maybe I'm just getting dumb in my old age!!
the motor has been rebuilt and it's bored out over 60, it came out of a 75 Ford Thunderbird.
An update, (bc no, I haven't got it figured out yet)
Everything is new, and installed correctly (as far as I know lol). My harmonic balancer has the letters atc but my distributor has tdc, so I'm confused there, I can't figure out how to get base time ( truck isn't running bc of this) and I'm not 💯 about firing order.
Also I think I went 180 out and don't know if I counter clockwise or clockwise to get back to zero.
Any help, I thought timing was like changing oil changing
Timing is isn't complicated but it's critical to get the whole curve correct. people just think it's simple because they don't understand it , just set your initial and you fixed it. not at all.
Get it on the compression stroke, bring it to TDC, put your #1 wire where the rotor is pointing then hook up all your wires counter clockwise in the correct firing order. then advance the timing a little bit and it should start.
