I made the mistake of using self etching primer( had 3 different types I used that I already had on hand) on all my parts I had soda blasted before using POR15. Everything was degreased properly. POR15 adheres best to a zinc phosphate surface which can be created as a base layer by several products out there including one made by POR15. All my paint is starting to peel off as a result of my mistake using self etching primers which you might think would be a good standard of practice especially those of us who have taken PPG courses for ICAR for applying urethane paints. It's too late now to turn back as I can't financially justify redoing everything unfortunately. The paint appears to have a great bond but I can tell that over time it will peel. Be meticulous and follow factory recommendations on this stuff. Here's a video I found summarizing some good practices with the product. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8_ckBJxW6mU
From my reading, POR15 is great if you are NOT blasting your parts and getting them to clean metal. It’s Paint Over Rust, not paint over clean metal.
All the complaints about POR15 I’ve seen are where people either applied it over dirty/scaley rusted surfaces, over bare metal, or over some other paint. It’s perfect for cleaned up rusty surfaces.. get all the scale off, degrease, apply their metal prep, get it thoroughly dry, and just brush or spray it on. I used it on my frame, followed the directions exactly, and it came out great. I was amazed how smooth a surface it produced given how rough the surface was it went on.
I think if you are going to bare metal, you should just use a good quality primer and paint…or have the frame powder coated.

Exactly. I painted some leftover on my rusty frame and adhered perfectly.
Dang that sucks Snacky. I have trouble finding rusty things to paint here in AZ, so no experience with POR15, but I can recommend methods make bare metal rusty.

There's a pile of parts in my truck bed that I was about to take to the soda blaster and can't decide whether to keep using POR15 or switch it up. Cause if I keep using POR15 then I need to skip the soda blasting. Which would save quite a bit of money skipping that step.
There's only a couple of manufacturers that make epoxy primers in rattle cans.... Ugh wish I could setup a compressor and just paint like I used to. I went to school for it 16 years ago and got into pinstriping and airbrushing. Met Chip Foose and he told me to go to design school in California after I already spent 5 years getting degrees paying cash up front with no debt sleeping like 2 hours a night working full time and to hear that from him I gave up painting. My Kafka brushes and air brushes just collecting dust... But painting with brushes vs the products you can put in HVLP are night and day
I've had the same results. I followed the por 15 instructions and used their cleaner and metal prep. But it does not stick to new metal or anything with paint/ primer. I've had sheets of it come off the floorboards and inside the wheelwells. But the rusty frame and axles, man that stuff sticks on there. Even when I put some extra on rusty areas that were not prepped.
