Got a question for you guys, my truck never smoked at idle until I drove to Idaho about three weeks ago. The smoke is blackish/blue and smells like fuel, I have not adjusted or turned anything, I have looked everything over and the oil consumption is the same. As soon as you start cruising above idle the smoke goes away (had the wife drive it while I followed). I am wondering if something is plugged or dirty, the air filter is still relatively new (about 6000 miles), the fuel filter may need to be changed but I can't think why that would make it smoke. There is no loss of power, lost fuel mileage. If you guys have any clues, let me know. Scotty
Possibly a bad injector or a small particle of something holding the injector partly open so it dribbles fuel. I have taken mine to a local shop that can test them for a problem similar to yours.
Thanks, my truck seems to have corrected itself, I have driven it quite a bit today and it doesn't seem to be smoking today. I think I will go ahead and put a fuel additive in it just to be on the safe side, but otherwise it seems okay. Scotty
You probably had a ring stuck, as with most problems with diesels the answer is to beat it harder. A little Marvel Mysery oil in the fuel and oil will help clean up your motor.
I think your on the right track with filter change & additive. But be careful what additive you pick. Some additives are not what they claim & have some strong chemicals that can do more harm than good. My personal choice would be Lucas fuel conditioner, it doesnt claim to work miracles but does add lubricity to the fuel & mild cleaners. Boils down to the old saying " If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is not true" LOL
Any of the Stanadyne additives would be a good choice if you can find them. I use the Performance Junior which is a cleaner and lubricity additive. They have others that boost cetane rating and provide anti-gell protection if you need it. Additives marketed by the people that made the injection pump seem like a safe bet.
