Looking for Piston options

Building a 400 and came upon some rebuilt Aussie heads which I wanted to use. Already have a cam, XE256H. The problem now is to get the compression to the right value. The engine should be able to still run on pump gas. I did a few calculations and came up with around 8.2 dynamic compression, which is on the high side. This was using the garbage replacement stock pistons that will sit something like 87 thou down in the cylinder and have no quench. First, will this run without detonation, having little quench, but a lower compression ratio. Second, any good pistons available that would provide quench with a dish? This includes 351c pistons.

Thanks in Advance

The only reason to use the Aussie heads is to be able to use the quench that the cylinder heads provide with their closed chamber design. Other than the closed chamber they are the same as the standard 400 head.

That said you need some 0 deck pistons with 30ish cc’s dish. This will get you into the 9.4ish static compression range.

Tim Meyer used to make pistons for these but he no longer does. It might be possible to machine more dish into his 400 pistons made for the stock heads. They are 0 deck but have 13cc dish so you’d need to make up the difference between the 58cc Aussie heads and the 75cc stock heads.

The only certain option is custom pistons.

Putting stock pistons back in with Aussie heads would be a waste of $ as you might as well use Tim’s 400 pistons and the open chamber stock heads

351c pistons fit but you need to bush the small end of the rod to fit the smaller 351c piston pin. When the bushing is being added you can adjust compression height a little if need be.
