Has anyone had a hard time getting the fuel gauge to work in these trucks, 1990 F150 5.0 e4od 4x4. I have had two different fuel pumps in it both aftermarket though and both do the same. One was a online pump and the other was from oriellys. The fuel gauge does the same thing with both them, first thought was the wires for the sender were crossed swapped them around and it showed full with the key on, put them back and with the key off it will show some level. But with the key on it goes past empty. The bed is off the truck right now and I have about a 1/4 tank of fuel. Is it a known problem for bad senders on the aftermarket pumps? I even swapped the gauge cluster with one from a parts truck and its the same thing.

I replaced both tanks and pump assemblies with Spectra parts about eight years ago. Both sending units are pretty accurate. I’d agree that you have a wiring problem in the harness.
It depends on your pump I replaced the front tank in mine with a Spectra Pump and the rear with a Delphi pump. The Spectra reads below empty when I have almost 5 gallons left and the Delphi is a little bit closer but it just depends on the resistance settings and how far the floater will go down. You just gotta know the way it goes.
