Intermittent starting problem

I have an 87 Ranger 4X4 with a 2.9 and 5 speed. This has happened twice over the past month. I will have driven the truck during the day and it will have run perfectly. Jump in it later that evening and it will turn over fine but not even a splutter. Last night I noticed that I wasn't getting the whirrr from the fuel pump prior to engaging the starter. I also hooked up a timing liget to it to ascertain that I was getting spark and I was. I waited a few hours and went out to try it again. Turned the key to the on position and heard the fuel pump...truck started no problem. My question is, should I just go ahead and change the pump mounted along the frame or is there a relay someplace that might be the culprit. If so, where would that be located. Any help is appreciated.

Regards,
Steve G

Hi steve62,

You may not believe this, but don't ignore it either!
Had this same problem in my wifes CJ Jeep <(mostly Ford built!), but it is related!
Check your key-start ignition switch mechanism!
After a while the push-pull rod that goes from the key lock cylinder to the terminal starting block bends and causes intermittant contact or it may simply be worn out (she is an '87)!

Hmmmm, yup I could see how that could be a problem. Thing is, everything else works with the electrical system with the key on. Is there a seperate connection for the fuel pump(s) aside from all the other electrical components/systems that are activated when the ignition switch is in the on position?

If you don't hear the fuel pumps all the time then I would look at the fuel pump relay.

It was in the engine compartment on the passengers side just behind the solenoid on my 1989 Ranger.
