When my TPS was going bad it was intermittent as well. No CEL and it ran so-so, then the CEL would suddenly come on and it would run and shift worse.
I am not a big fan of piercing to test wires. I went to the junk yard and got the connection point for the TPS with about 4 inches of wire on either side. You can un plug it and then plug your existing TPS into the junkyard connector and then plug the junkyard TPS connector into your harness. This leaves you with three pairs of wires to twist together and that is where you can take you readings. It seems like a bit of messing around but once you have this little gem you will be happy. Nice place to attach clips for taking readings.
