Why buy a F250 when a F350 cost only a little more

OK, so I'm in the market for a Ford Super Duty truck. I see so many more F250 trucks than F350. I always thought it was the price difference but I just realized that there isn't much difference (couple thousand). So I've trying to understand why do some many people opt for the F250. I'd figured a couple thousand more for payload you may never use is still worth it.

The Powerstroke F250 with HCTTP is identical to Powerstroke F350 from 2020-present. In some states F350 is taxed and licensed as a commercial vehicle at higher cost which is why Ford offers this. The sticker on the F250 HCTTP will show lower hitch weight rating but the parts are all identical. Many threads discussing this around here.

Not even a couple thousand....but I can think of one reason, when you don't need the 350 and the 250 is on the lot. When ordering, the only reason I can think of would be, again, not needing an F-350 and wanting to avoid higher fees if living in an area impacted by that sorta thing.

I bought a 250. My 250 Tremor is literally identical in every respect to a 350 Tremor that's equipped the same way except for one letter in the VIN#. It was a little less expensive and the actual resell could be a little better because the 3/4 ton market is larger than the 1 ton market......at least in my area. I'll never max out payload or tow capacity.

A 350 can have a couple of standard features compared to a 250. A locker rear axle for one.

If you need more payload get the 350. A similarly built lariat 250 loaded will probably have around 2k payload and a 350 will have around 3300lbs

My F250 is identical to a 350 except for the badging, and of course the “listed” payload. But even with a 3016 payload rating with the 6.7, it’s more than I need. Besides, knowing that my truck is the same as a 350 it wouldn’t hurt my feelings even if I did need to go over the payload by a few hundred lbs. besides this, it was less expensive than a 350 and insurance is less. In some states the licensing and registration is less too.

Buy what you need.

For me, it is a matter of staying at or below the CDL requirement of 26,001 pounds.
And, I tow a 16K GVWR trailer from time to time, truck is 10K GVWR, so with that trailer I'm right up against that 26K limit.

My brother and I have similarly optioned trucks with his being an F250 and mine being an F350. His truck rides significantly nicer than mine, with 1 less leaf spring in the rear.

Oh really.....what year they do that?

All our 350's are derated to 10K for the 26K limit as mentioned above.

I assumed the 350 would have a stiffer ride, that’s why I got a 250.
I just wish the locking 3.73 was available in the 250.
The 3.55s, 10 speed and 7.3 is fine for my needs and better MPG anyway.

That payload difference isn't important, till it is. A lot of 5th wheels will creep into the 10.8k-11.5k zone. If your state penalizes you, than a 250 might be right, otherwise a 350 everytime.

3.73 locker is no extra charge on the 350.

Because Ford has to put 80psi in the rear tires. It’s probably really that simple.
