98-11 Ranger front diff specs, setup depth, tools

getting ready to regear my 2000 Ranger. for depth specs and such on the front D35 IFS the manual more or less says get the Rotunda tools.
has anybody used the tools/gauge blocks for this diff? or know what the depth specs are?
I'd like to get the measurements of the setup disk and adapter block, should be easy to fab something up on the mill.
the tool sets on ebay are either incomplete, too rusty, or too expensive.

the procedure is: (short version)
set calibrated tube across carrier bearing saddles,
stack calibrated disk and adapter plate on the inner pinion bearing,
measure gap between the 2,
add or subract the +/- spec etched on the pinion gear, that's the shim size.

note: these differential housings do not have a machined surface for the carrier bearing caps, cannot indicate from them.
instead you indicate from the bearing saddles via the calibrated tube.

preliminary course measurements put the depth around 2-7/16" from the pinion bearing inner race to the bottom of the carrier bearing saddle.
I need to rig up some precise blocks to get the exact amount, more to follow.

I never use those when regearing an axle. I take all the old stuff out and measure the shim thickness of all the shims and use that as a starting point, put it all together with setup bearings on the carrier and pinion, set the backlash, tighten everything up and run a pattern on the gears, adjust the pinion depth with shims until you get a good pattern then take it all apart and reassemble with the regular bearings. Running a pattern is the best way to tell if your gears are meshing correctly.

All that stuff will just cloud your thinking and at the end of the day the pattern it prints out is what you go by anyways. Save your time and money and just do it as already said.
