79 f100 swb 2wd 300/3speed manual. My question is what's a good trans to replace the 3 speed with. Trans is getting tired needs a rebuild so I figured now is a good time to move to a 4 or 5 speed. I thought about the m5od cause I have a 91 f150 with one and I dont mind it, but I dont want to have to go hydraulic clutch. I figured I would as and see what was all out there that I'm forgetting lol
How do you use the truck? And what is your axle ratio?
You can put a T5 in there if you are doing light duty stuff and have 3.50 or better gears. (reverse and OD are pretty tall in the T5)
The Mazda hydraulic clutch would just be bringing parts over from an '84 or later truck, or an aftermarket or other adapted clutch master. Easy for me to say.
AOD automatic, or the 4 speed OD (although you said "good trans"....) would bolt in there without much trouble.
The truck is just a cruiser no work for her lol. I'm not sure of my ratio but it seems really high. I would like to keep the mechanical clutch just for nostalgia lol
The T5 will probably require an adapter to your bell. The shifter position might be just right. Check to see what first gear is. Some of them have a 4+ first gear as found behind 4 cylinders etc, which may or may not work out for you.
The Mustang bell might be less money but may require fiddling to make the clutch work as those, iirc, were cable "pull" type clutch release. Keeping your bell means you keep your clutch, other than a disc with the correct input spline if needed.
