Bad fuel pump?

I would take that filter out of that area and put a new one between the pump and carb.....
On the 226, I don't see a problem with a filter ahead of the pump, because it's at or below the bottom of the fuel tank (flooded suction). On a V8 it can cause problems because the pump is up high on the engine. I have filters on both sides of the pump (electric).

Electric is a key word there, but as long as yours works. It's different on each car, but sometimes the mechanical pumps (flooded level or not) CAN cause issues with an older fuel pump trying to pull fuel through old, dirty, or brittle fuel lines and a filter compounds that scenario. Obviously modern fuel injected cars with hi-po electric pumps can easily pull or push fuel through a fuel filter regardless of where it is inline.

Just a suggestion for someone having potential issues with fuel delivery.
