I've been having some problems with my engine in my 88 f150 with the 4.9. It runs rich, I get super poor fuel economy; maybe 80 miles out of the 15-gallon tank, and it has a misfire. I got a code reader from my uncle and ran a KOEO Test and got some codes.
First Code was a 51, for "ECT sensor out of range indicated / Circuit open
The second Code was a 67, for "Air Conditioning compressor clutch switch fault"
I'm not worried about code 67 because the previous owner removed all of the A/C components and i was expecting something like that. But with the code for the ECT sensor, would that cause my problems? and if so should I just replace the sensor? I work at an oil shop and my smog guy said he would try to smog it for me but he failed it because of the misfire and the check engine light.
51 probably means that the engine is never coming out of Cold Start Enrichment, so it's basically running dead rich all the time. So yes, I'd say you need a new ECT. The misfire is potentially caused by a fouled plug, from running too rich.
Update: I was using an innova tester. i was reading the manual and saw that it said there were two sets of codes, with the first set repeating itself. Im going to check for more codes when i get out of school and also do a KOER test.
There isn't generally much point, in bothering to try and run the KOER tests, until you've fixed the KOEO issues. Because oftentimes, fixing the KOEO issues can clear up KOER codes.
Make you get the engine up to temperature before running the KOEO tests and Stored Code display. Otherwise you can trigger a false ECT code during the KOEO tests.
Code 67 definition for KOEO or Stored Codes is: Neutral safety circuit failure. If the truck has a manual transmission and you have a 4.9L engine you need to hold the clutch in during the tests. If you do not do that you will get that code.
