Torque Converter Cost?

I've read a bunch of the articles about "rumbles" or "chatter" in this section and most of the time it sounds like it could be a problem with the torque converter.

I have a 97 F150 4X4 with a 34OD. Around 40mph under light acceleration I have a rumble type sound, another article described it like going over rumble strips and that's exactly it. Once I get above 45mph it goes away or if I accelerate hard I don't have any shudder or slippage. When this starts, if I just keep the accelerator in the same position, it will shudder for a second and then stop for a second, shudder and stop, shudder and stop. Some kind of a problem with some clutch plates engaging and disengaging seems to fit the symptoms.

I'm guessing that I might be having problems with the torque converter. I guess I have a few questions yet about it.

1) Are there any "cheap" fixes?

2) As silly as this sounds....will this get significantly worse over time or do damage to the rest of the transmission?

3) Can this wait to be repaired or is this something that I need to fix asap.

4) What would be the estimated repair cost to fix or replace the torque converter unit?

As always, thank you for any wisdom you can provide.

Mike B.

Rear wheel drive big cars with the AOD-E or 4R70W transmissions have had that problem. The solution there was to change the ATF, including draining the torque converter through its plug. And on refill adding the proper amount of LubeGard RED along with the new fluid.
LubeGard Red isn't a snake oil, it has cured shudder on those trans's. www.lubegard.com
