Can anyone help with my power running boards on my 2017 F 350 SD that keep shutting themselves off for unknown reason ..
When I go to turn them back on, sometimes I can and sometimes I cannot.
Drive around for a few blocks and they sometimes will turn themselves back on.
Thank you for your response.
They are original equipment Ford running boards. How ever , the truck did not come from the factory with the running boards,
I installed them later with the help of a member of Ford Truck Enthusiasts who had installed his the same way. You can see his posts at Anibal Medina.
When I try to enter the truck I go on the dash to running boards and the cursor says they are off. Try to move them to the on position and it will work [ SOMETIMES } .
Sometimes they will not turn on at all. I Then move the cursor to the open all the time position and sometimes they will come out. then after closing the door after around 5 minutes
they will fold back under. and the whole ritual starts again. Sometimes they will work fine all day and not be a problem at all, but lately it is getting worse.
Simply put , It's a crap shoot every time I open the door as weather or not they will unfold. It is an intermittent problem. I took to my local Ford Dealer and of course it makes a fool out
of me because they work fine at the dealer. but by the time I get home they are not working again.
My truck is a 2017 f 350 6.7 liter diesel with 2 batteries. It has 16000 miles on it and just turned 4 years old.
Is it possible that this could happen if only one battery is weak? ALSO, sometimes the navigation radio will be
playing from a zip drive and all is fine, But when I shut the truck off , the next time I start it the radio comes on an AM channel.
I do recall about 4 or 5 months ago I went in to the truck and it would not start. Batteries were not dead, but did not have enough power to start the truck.
I charged the batteries for an hour and have had no problem with starting since. I thought maybe I had left something on and it drained the batteries.
The radio still every so often changes from zip to AM. I don't put a lot of miles on the truck as you can see from the low miles . Truck does sit a lot.
but, if you feel that could be the problem, then I will take it to Ford and have them check the batteries.
I’m not going to try to diagnose your running boards problem specially but if your batteries are original and 4 years old then they absolutely need to be replaced. Just because they will take a charge and start the truck doesn’t mean they’re still good. Bad batteries can cause all sorts of weird issues with the electronics on modern vehicles. Replacing them would be a good place to start.

not to mention the batteries in these trucks kinda suck period! Ford had a bunch of leaky ones there for awhile. I’m gonna replace mine at the 3 year mark if they aren’t leaking before that.
If your batteries are going bad, the truck will start shutting off things that are not necessary. I would take the others advice and replace BOTH batteries!
Thank you all for your responses,
The problem is not the batteries. Took the vehicle to Ford and the batteries checked out perfectly.
After 3 hours of resetting modules and changing and resetting vehicle codes, the problem of intermittently turning themselves off still exists.
Anybody experience this problem in the past.
Keeping in mind that I installed them later with the help of a member of Ford Truck Enthusiasts who had installed his the same way. You can see his posts at Anibal Medina.
Everything worked fine, then all of a sudden ,this began to happen.
It seems to me that if it is turned off in your dashboard menu after you last turned it back to "auto" that either (1) something is telling the computer to turn it off because of a fault (perhaps motor drawing too many amps or a sensor not getting a reading it expected)(Note: I have no idea if the system is sophisticated enough to throw a fault for something like this) or (2) something is wrong with the hardware or software in the control unit. (Maybe an error in the Forscan changes?)
If you were having intermittent issues, but the menu always showed them in "auto" then I'd suspect a loose connection, but I think there is significance in the fact that they keep reverting to "off" in the menu.
