Auto headlights is not DRL and DRL is not auto headlights. Auto headlights turn your head lights on when dark and shut them off when it's light. DRL are Daytime Running Lights. Yes, the DRL can work in conjunction with auto headlights, but it is not auto headlights. If you disable the DRL, it does not disable the auto headlight.

unless my 22 is programmed different, none of my headlights are on when DRL is on, the high beam and low beam lights are off. The DRL is only the halo.
I don't understand why people don't just turn on their headlights if they want drls... I guess it's the whole lazy do it for me automatically culture thing now. Make me safe...
Calm down there, skippy. No one is trying to take your rights. Some people like them on the new trucks just because the LED bar looks cool in the day time. They are much nicer on the Lariat than on the King Ranch for some reason.
My guess would be that Uncle Sugar mandates the DRL option and that laziness doesn't have a whole lot to do with it.
Not so much Uncle Sugar (USA), not required in the USA but they are required in Canada (Aunt Beaver???) and a few other countries where Super Duties are exported to so I imagine the Ford Engineers made it easier by having them there but with the ability to turn off. My 08 350 was a Canadian truck and it had DRL activated. I had the dealer turn them off when I bought it in the US.

I used to not really care about DRL so much. But since I once got into FORScan and somehow managed to get the fogs to come on with DRL, I kinda like it. Mostly because I have yellow fogs that contrast nicely with the white headlights and white switchback front turns that are also on with DRL. I think it makes for being more easily seen.
But others might not care for DRL and that's just fine too. Most everyone personalizes their vehicles to some extent.

I use the auto setting pretty much only for the DRL lights (daytime), which on mine are just the outer LED's, and only when I want them to be on. I do think more cars/trucks should have an auto setting for the dummies I see every night driving around with just the DRL's on.
One thing I hate, that could be related to auto headlights, are cars that are parked in parking lots with their lights blaring at the car parked facing them. I assume they are so used to auto headlights that they are clueless how to manually turn the headlights off.
I think the bigger issue about night driving with DRL's on came when the dash lights started coming on when you start the vehicle. People see the dash light and think the headlights are on. In the old days you had to turn the headlights on to be able to see anything on the dash.
