I've looked everywhere in my Chilton manual and I can't find the torque specs for the front and rear axle u-bolts on my '79 F-250. Can someone help me here? Working from memory, I thought they were 150 ft-lb
If 1/2", I'll torque clean dry threads of U-bolts to 105 ..... but if 9/16 I'll torque them to 120 .... in steps like 75 --- 95 --- 105 --- 120 ... always in a criss cross pattern with the goal of equal threads showing when done. I keep a adjustable 6" rule to check exposed thread length with near by.
After some miles, I'll recheck final torque. If a lot of threads are showing and if they point downward ... I'll add a second nut then, snug it up, and using a cut-off wheel trim any remaining threads flush. I did not do this on my '77 as I have never had occasion to visit axle U-bolts on it ... and the threads p;oint up where my head or a jack will not find them. This picture is my '07 after removing lift blocks and using new shorter 9/16" square U-bolts. I didn't trim other smaller double nutted sway bay mount bolts as they aren't the lowest parts onder there, but those axle U-bolts had long sharp ends and there was no sway bar then.
