Have you looked at the shifter linkage for anything obvious? I would look for a shift arm on backwards, or a shift cable attached to the wrong side of the linkage.
Does this have a proper adjusted TV cable or linkage?
Does it shift and down shift properly?
The AOD linkage and TV cable are picky and fairly complicated for an automatic.
If in doubt or if not shifting correctly, do not drive it. You can ruin an AOD in short order with a wrong TV adjustment.
One of millions of videos and links on the subject.
No cable, stock column shifter linkage I was told (Don't know if it's true I'm not previously a Ford Guy) that the shift arm can't be reversed, that was my first thought.
I forgot to mention this is a Carburated 302.

You may be able to. Is it the same part? Does the TV linkage end up the same? You have to adjust that TV linkage with a pressure gauge to get it right.
