fuel return dual tanks

Hello all,

I want to eliminate my vapor lock this summer once and for all. I just broke in my new motor and even in October i can see the fuel boil in the clear filter.

I was thinking of running the return to the rear tank and supply from the front. I would marry the two tanks together with a fuel line. The rear sits higher in the frame so i would tap the bottom of that tank and run it to the top of the forward tank. No more tank selector.

Cool fuel would pump from the front tank and hot fuel returned to the rear tank and then through gravity make it was back to the front tank. The downside i see is fuel possible sitting in the filler neck of the front tank.

Am I on crack or does this sound like a doable mod? I am/was a huge fan of mechanical pumps and they are on all my classics but the ethanol and boiling gas is getting to be a pain.

Chris

If you look at the 1987 year the last carbonated year of the F350 with the 460 motor that's exactly what the engineers did at Ford. It was set up with a 4180 Holley carb which had two bowls that vented to evap system to charcoal canisters and then to the tank. The tanks were fitted with in-tank electric fuel pumps. I would seriously consider modeling a carbonated motor as close to that as possible if your considering plumbing a return system anyways.

I used to have a truck set up with 2 tanks & no valve...if the truck is parked, fuel will flow from the tank with more fuel to the tank with less fuel.
Why not just a 6 way switching valve?

The point is the system already exists in the 87' with return line and switching valve.
Here are the lines with the mechanical fuel pump there is a electric fuel pump version as well.

Sorry i never closed this thread,,,

I ended up running a return to the front tank. I pulled the tank and welded a bung in the top.
I run off the main/front tank and when it is on E if needed i switch to the rear tank.. THe rear tank runs the motor and dumps the return into the front tank. The rear tank empties relatively fast and then i switch back to the main/front tank... It is not a perfect setup in that if you run the rear and the front is full, It can overfill the front tank... I do like having it manual,, If the 6 way valve failed,, it might also dump the fuel into the wrong tank????

Cheers, happy New Year,
Chris
