I second the absence of concern over 80 miles daily on a 300K mile 7.3 (well-maintained, of course).
My own truck is sitting at almost 340K miles, purchased 15 years ago with 114K on the clock. If I were faced with driving cross-country right now, all I would do would be to do an oil change, service my spare tire, and load up my jack in case of a flat tire. I will admit, though, that I know my truck and every wrenching activity it has seen in the last 15 years, me doing about 95% of that wrenching. Absolutely no qualms. As for considering a job which required 80 miles daily, the only wincing I might do is over the fuel cost, but not a single concern over the truck itself.
Heck, with truck prices the way they are right now, I keep pondering whether I might not be better off just biting the bullet on hitting my existing truck with some serious proactive cash, which I believe I could do for less than selling and upgrading to a 2012+ newer option.
Just to let everyone know, he ended up selling the truck before I could go look at it on Saturday. I guess my hunt for a 7.3 continues.
Wasn't meant to be then my friend. The right one will come along in time. I looked for nearly a year for our truck and my wife ended up finding it 600 miles away (one way). I called and told the guy I could be there in about 30 hours from the time of our conversation with cash and if it was what he said it was, I would drive away with it.
At the time it had ~200,000 miles on it and needed a clutch and water pump as I drove away. Here we are 8 years later and it is a dedicated tow pig that is reliable, efficient and has longevity.
Keep looking and the right one will come along one of these days. The Marketplace here has a 7.3L every once in a while.
Got another one Im looking at guys. 2002 with 240,000 on the odometer. Bone stock truck down to the correct tire size. Was maintained most of its life at the Ford dealership. Lariat with leather in good condition. The least he will go is 16k. Any thoughts?
imo.the leather looks good because it is not original to the truck. I have after market custom made leather seat covers and they do not look that good. you said this has 240,000, I have 210,000. Note the steering wheel cover, take that off and see the original wear. Still, for the market, may not be a bad buy. I would not sell my 2001 for 16,000
Biggest thing to me is where is it at mechanically at this age and miles?
Coolant fresh? Ever had a water pump, Oil cooler leaking? Glowplugs. All the orings in the HPO and Fuel system in the engine valley/fuel bowl.
Belt, Tensioners, fan clutch, Batteries & starter
Then drivetrain, ever had ujoints, front axle ujoints, balljoints, unit bearings & seals? TRE's, Draglink and Panhard, swaybar bushings and brakes? How does the steering box feel?
All that stuff doesn't really add value to a truck, but it needing to be done soon sure costs alot of $ so its worth it to find out the condition of all those items and or see documentation showing they have been done.
I'll take stock over modified ANY day of the week (no, I am not an expert on these trucks, far from it, but I have bought a car or two or twentyseven).
If he has maintained it at the dealership, he'll have receipts. Make sure he leaves you with originals (or a copy) and you can figure out what to do from there.
As to the leather, we'd need more pictures.
As to my thoughts otherwise... excuse me, I have to go put my truck up for sale, anyone want a regular cab 2WD with a stake bed and 173kmi in the NE?
