is there a difference between a 4r100 from a navigator 2001 and a 7.3 f-350 1999 4r100 ? sensors? anything that would be unchangeable to make it work ?
i have a 99 f-350 7.3 needs new transmission
a 2001 navigator 4r100 available will it work?
The clutches are different. The torque converter is different. But most importantly the cases are different and a transmission from a Navigator will not bolt to a 7.3L.
It depends on the build date of your 1999. The early '99 trans was different than the later '99 trans. They are not interchangeable.
If your truck is a late '99 and if the trans is from a 7.3L Excursion and it is 4x4 if your is a 4x4, and or a 4x2 if yours is a 4x2, they are identical.
i think my truck is 04/98 but i recently put a 2001 7.3 in it seems to work fine can you tell me why their not interchangeable?
is there something i can change to make it work
any suggestions ?
if i have to hunt down a used early split year transmission i might as well order one
$$$$ i wasnt looking to buy a new one
i appreciate picking your brain

Whatever you get you MUST get a two wheel drive transmission. A 4x4 transmission could be rebuilt to a 4x2 configuration, but if you are going to rebuild a trans, rebuild the one you have.
A later trans could be used in an early truck such as yours. You need to pull the pump out and change an orifice. If you choose to not do this the lockups will SLAM on. But it will work.
My truck is an E99 but my transmission has been swapped out for a rebuilt one years ago. Is there any way I can tell what that transmission is without removing it? Outside of the transmission itself, what are the differences that make them not compatible? I hope you'll bear with me here, I get lost just thinking about automatic transmissions.
The one that is important for putting a later trans in an early truck is the orifice that I noted above. If you don't change that orifice and install an on/off solenoid body, and an on/off torque converter the torque converter lockup will SLAM on every time. You'll hate it.
If your trans shifts fine, you have an early '99 trans. A later trans without modifications will not shift well at all.
Later transmissions also have two speed sensors that the earlier transmission doesn't have. There is also no electrical connection for those sensors. That's OK, just leave the sensors in place to plug the holes. The early PCM doesn't know to read them.
i have decided to take your advice and rebuild the one i have rather than try to find a used one like mine $850 used later model
$1500 rebuild mine
$1850 ford reman
is there any chance the rebuilder comes back to me and says its going to cost more after taking apart?
ford reman is 3 yrs 100,000 miles
rebuild is 1 yr i think not sure
tomorrow i will be making a few calls
im leaning toward the reman comes full of fluid and dyno tested in a nice crate delivered sounds so pleasant no guess work
reman takes 1 1/2 weeks
