My '97, 4.2L F150 XL with the 4R70W tranny, had been sitting for awhile( like 11 months). I got it started up, and went for a drive, before I stored it it drove fine, now it's sluggish and shifts hard between 2nd in 3rd. While it was being stored I replaced, fuel tank, fuel pump, spark plug cables, the entire front end, and most of the brake lines, and hose. I did nothing to the transmission, except disconnect the driveshaft from the transaxle. I did do some work in the relay box, and connected and disconnected the battery quite often.
Does anybody have an idea what couldve happened?
No idea what happened (not a mechanic), but have you checked the transmission fluid? Look at the fluid level and see if it still looks/smells ok. That's a simple thing to check at least.

How many miles on the trans fluid & filter? If it hasn't been done I think the book says 30k. If you do not know then I would change it, just good insurance. Plan on a pan gasket just in case some people reuse them I don't. Even if it looks clean in the reservoir doesn't mean the rest of it is. Pistons tend to stick with dirty fluid
2-3 Accumulator — The 2-3 accumulator is used to soften the 2-3 shift by absorbing some of the direct clutch pressure. Forward clutch pressure is applied to the top side of the 2-3 accumulator piston, holding the piston down until clutch pressure is enough to overcome it. The middle section of the piston is exhausted to the sump. The 2-3 accumulator also helps control forward engagement.
As a side note when I first got my 97 the first thing I did was put a shift kit in it so it WOULD shift HARD. But It should not do this unless you want it to.
