Is there an easy fix for the aluminum panel on the tailgate to keep it from falling off? On the 95 I just bought, the bottom of all three of the plastic mount tabs are broken off, and the panel is loose. I'd hate to lose that panel going down the road, it looks really nice on there! Anyone have any suggestions for securing it better?
The last time I checked was with about 70/30 highway/city driving. The old truck got 11.8mpg. Not too bad considering the gears & big-block. Check out this thread to see what others are getting.
I'd check with local junkyards and see if you can just get the plastic pieces. They are all identical and screw in from the inside panel of the tailgate. I only have one good one, or I would send it your way. I ended up taking mine completely off because the tailgate is so trashed, but the dress piece was still in good shape.
Joe- when I pulled the aluminum panel off, it looked like the plastic pieces were riveted on. When I pulled the access panel on the inside of the tailgate off, it didn't look like there was any way to get down inside far enough to be able to get a screw out. Sounds like I may need to buy a rivet gun???
Mine was fastened with screws through the tailgate. They were torx screws. I know the tailgates are interchangeable.
Let me see if I can explain something. With my tailgate down, there were 2 torx screws on each edge of the tailgate that screwed into the panel. Following these screws across, I think I had 3 more rows to take out. The plastic pieces stuck through the outer skin of the tailgate and left holes about 1/2" or slightly larger in two places for each plastic mounting rib.
I don't think that they changed anything, but they might have.
They changed something! On mine, there are two acorn nuts on the very edge of the tailgate on each side with the tailgate down that hold the panel on. Once you remove those, you can pop the panel off the tailgate. The plastic units stick through the tailgate, but mine appeared to be held on with rivets- they may be torx screws though, I'll have to get a good flashlight and check.
Yeah, acorn nuts. I knew there was something but just couldn't place it. If you draw a straight line across the tailgate, there should be some screws that hold the plastic pieces on. I wouldn't doubt it if they changed something. I know the tailgates are interchangeable. I also know that the design on the decorative panel changed, maybe they changed the fastener details then.
Sorry I can't be more help.
If I remember to take home a digital camera today, I can take pictures of mine if that would help. Let me know.
Joe- anything would help, thanks! Mine were attached kind of in the middle with what appeared to be rivets, but the pic might help clarify. Thanks again.
