I have spent the last two years taking care of my mom who had a stroke and had Alzheimer's. She passed away in February so now after dealing with all the lawyers I need to get back on my truck. Looking at buying fenders and a complete bed for my 49 F1. Who has used the metal ones out on the market now. Or should I try and find fiberglass. Mine are pretty shot and my bed wasn't save able. Thanks'
Mar-K does make a fine product, but I don't believe they make the early style raised panel bed. For that, if that's what you want, Mack-Products is the place to go, direct from the manufacturer.
Hi tracy, welcome back, sorry for your loss. I've seen midfifty beds for sale at several car shows they go to. They look well made. I made my own bed, but I did get fiberglass rears (51-52) from them. Well satisfied with them, and half the cost of steel. I got steel front fenders (48-50) from lmc. 19 ga. , pretty thin, but that's probably the industry standard nowadays. Soon they'll be stamping them out of Reynolds wrap. I think you take a hit on resale with fiberglass, so keep that in mind down the road. Beds and fenders ship truck freight, which is a big cost. Lmc ships free truck freight over $1000.00, so maybe the others would price match, worth a shot.good luck with your project! Larry
Sorry for your loss. I'm kinda in the same boat; Dad has a brain aneurysm and has had several strokes, my stepmom has dementia and is fading fast. The pair of them take a big part of my time.
Not much time left in the day to mess with truck stuff. Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty lucky. Both my wife and I are in our late 50's and still have all of our parents. They take a lot of our time, but, it's good to have them around.
I've heard good stuff about the Mar-K products. I don't have any fist hand experience though.
Thank You for all the comments about my mom. It did take all my time but I wouldn't trade any minute spent with her and I would gladly do it again. And thank you for the ideals about the bed and fenders. I looked at mar-k and they don't have the 49 style that I want to stay with. I know it's going to cost more to stay with it but I like this style better then the flat style. I am going to talk with mid-west today and see what they have. I know the metal fronts are thin and if they have the upper and lower in stock I think I will do this on the front and go with fiberglass on the rear to off set the difference in cost of that style of bed. Not building a show truck. It will be my run around local town and car show truck. I have been working on this truck for about 15 years and it needs to be on the road soon. Thanks' again
Hey tracy, I had a senior moment yesterday, meant to say I bought my rear fenders from Midwest early ford, not midfifty. Lmc offers a 10 percent discount if you pick up, I think Midwest says they price match. Ya' might run that by them and save a few more bucks. Larry
Good call on staying with the 48-50 style bed sides and rounded stake pockets. I too prefer the little bit of extra styling as opposed to the flat bed sides of the later beds.
Yesterday i made the 5 hour drive to Midwest Early Ford and bought a full truck load of parts for the 49. I got the complete bed kit with stainless steel hardware and new tail gate. The tail gate will be shipped when it comes back in stock. I got fiberglass rear fenders, last set of steel front and lower fenders in steel also. One lower was the last one they had that was made in the U.S.A. I also got my windshield, rear and side glass. I saved quite a bit by paying cash so I got window regulators and door latch's' . I got a few other small items too. I will get new vent window assembly's when ready to put them in. Long fast trip. Brian took good care of me and hat's off to him.
