New to this whole thing. ive got a 2003 super duty 6.0 diesal. Tranny has 100,000 and it shifts great when its cold but after it warms up it shifts hard barely wants to move when i push the gas peddel. also when a consistant speed like 60 it will shift for no reason. i have a tuner in the truck. it came with the truck when i bought it. dont no how to use it.. any info on tranny problem would be great
You need to read the codes. The auto parts stores that read codes free CANNOT read the codes that you need. Forscan is a great way to read codes. You can download it free at www.forscan.org. Their page also tells how to select an adapter that plugs into the OBDII port. I bought mine from Amazon for less than $30. Once you have the codes we can help. Right now all I can tell you is that something is wrong.
You could also pay a good independent shop or a Ford dealer to read the codes.
At that mileage it wont hurt to do tranny drain and filter. Just drain not a complete flush. This might not fix issue but its good maintenance.. If that fixes issue then go 5k and drain and fill again..
Thank you. so far I have a appointment to bring it in on the 6th to the people who put the trans in. its only got 100,000 on it. I was just wondering if there is anyrhing i can try first. so thank you for you guys advice i will try it!
Oil (lubricate) and transmission fluids (hydraulic fluid) have two different purposes so a comparison between them is not wise.
I recommended a drain and fill from personal experience. First I have seen/had flushes cause more problems then they solve. I suspect that the flush stirs up debris that clogs up one if the many tiny passage ways leading to issues.
Second I haven't seen too much issues doing a full drain (no flush) but there have be a couple, this might have to do with the tranny already on its way out so its hard to say.. These are the reason I recommended the drain and fill.
I do drain and fills when ever I get my high mileage vehicles in and so far haven't had an issue. I do the first (with filter) then 5k later do a second, after that I am on a 30k drain with 90k filter.
Plus if you do have issue with the tanny after the drain, filter and fill it will probably need to be drained again and less money down the drain..
