Just before my trip to Rifle, CO (for hunting) and then up to MT (for fishing) I put in a 2.5 gal jug of DEF. The level at that time was just a bit under 1/2. By the time I got up to Rock Springs, WY the truck was giving me the 500 miles to empty notification. I bought a very expensive jug of DEF at a truck stop (that didn't have DEF at the pump ). I got to MT and the truck was counting down to less than 50 miles to empty and reduction to 50 MPH. I was already 75 miles from any possible retail site that sold DEF. I contacted a buddy who was still on his way and asked him to bring a jug of DEF.
A couple of starts of the engine later and the truck finally decided to recognize the expensive DEF and all was well. My buddy still brought a jug and I added that just to have it in the tank. I've never gone that close to reduced power.
At the Love's truck stop in Cheyenne, the "skip" button at the fuel pump wasn't working. I couldn't fuel up without also taking on DEF. As I recall, it was $3.28/gallon. At that price, it's more expensive than a 2.5 gallon jug of the Walmart brand of DEF.

Current pricing for walmart 2.5 gallon DEF is $7.88 plus tax, so depending on how much the tax is where you buy the jug, walmart DEF now costs more than at the pump.
At the base $7.88 price, that is $3.15 a gallon, sales tax in my area is 8.25%, 65 cents, making the total cost $8.53 and $3.41 per gallon.
So, I am back to buying DEF at the pump.
And, there is a truck stop along one of my frequent routes that has DEF for $2.26 a gallon, so I may stop in there next time I go by.
With my tax rate, the jug is still less than what the pump price was. I have yet to find "cheap" DEF at the pump.
The DEF nozzle at the pump is always caked with crud. If I bang it on the concrete I get a bunch of crud to come off. Filling with a jug of DEF always seems to be less messy than using the pump.

Do the trucks always take a while to recognize def has been added? My truck recognized the added def yesterday with a simple key on and the off again, didn’t even start it.

Mine seems to move immediately although many people do report a slower increase.

It's hit or miss. I usually add a 2.5 gallon jug when the gauge goes below half and don't worry about when the gauge recognizes the increase. It's a goofy system. I don't want a bunch of old DEF in the tank, but I also don't want to run low. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
This time, I didn't realize it was so low. I was doing about five hours of heavy towing in 4Lo. I think that's what sucked up so much DEF.
