Truck has been sitting since 2000. Grandfather gave it to me, and it's my project. It is a 1985 F-150 5.0 302cid V8 EFI XLT Lariat, with a longbed and single tank. It stumbles while shifting into reverse and drive. It also stumbles occasionally when accelerating. I believe the pump to be the cause of these issues.
Questions
What size tank was available those years?
Would the fuel pump be inside the tank or mounted outside?
What would the best pump(s) be for daily driving?
I've read up on replacing pumps, and saw stuff about there being two pumps; low pressure pump in the tank, high pressure sending to the engine. Would that be the case with this setup?
What are the parts needed to replace the entire fuel delivery system?
(Specific part numbers/names/brands would be extremely helpful, but any help is good.)
**I should note, my grandfather had the tank replaced at some point. As far as I know, it is a factory OEM replacement tank.**
All longbeds have 19 gallon tanks.
On your truck you have two pumps, one inside the tank and a high pressure pump on the frame under the driver's door area.
Go to the store and buy replacement stock pumps.
Yes, you have two pumps.
New tank, new sending unit with pump, new fuel filter in reservoir, new high pressure fuel pump, new fuel regulator, new fuel injectors.
I can post some pictures of what your high pressure pump and reservoir (filter housing) look like. I have not replaced the high pressure pump on my truck. Pump is located under drivers feet on the frame rail.
