Maybe a dumb question but does anyone know why the aftermarket heater blower motors have long through bolts? Are these for adjustments? I tried to replace mine with one from Autokrafters, C5TZ-18527-A. Unfortunately it did not fit as the fan rubbed on the heater box housing. The original motor does not have these bolts. If anyone has purchased a replacement from Rock Auto or LMC let me know how they fit.
I bought that same item from Autokrafters.
I cut the extended threads off for a better look - I'd much rather have the NOS with smooth heads instead of threads and nuts. (Where was buzz when I needed him?)
This is how I positioned the assembly:
The squirrel cage needs to be adjusted along the motor shaft to fit in the heater housing just right. It's a tight fit.
The cage is held in position with a set-screw. Loosen the set screw. Slide the squirrel cage towards the end of the motor shaft. Do not tighten the set screw. Place the assembly in position in the heater housing. The cage will hit the back of the housing and slide toward the motor. Remove the assembly carefully - the cage will be at the max extended position. Move it a bit closer to the motor and tighten the set screw. This should position it just shy of interference. Replace the assembly back in the housing and check for interference. Do-over until it's in a good spot.
I also removed the front mounting plate and re-used my stock plate. Not sure why - maybe there was a fit problem, but probably just wanted to retain the gasket surface that the replacement did not have, and wanted to keep as many stock elements as possible.
dont make the mistake i just did recently. get the rotation correct . clockwise or counter clockwise. this mistake cost me time and money and frustraton
Just got my NOS motor…thanks again iBuzzard! I have one concern, when I dry fitted everything all fit perfect but the cage seems to spin a bit off kilter. Double checked cage on my old motor and it spun the same way. I played with it a bit and tried to adjust cage position on the shaft but still couldn’t get it to spin true. Am I missing something?

I haven’t had to change the one on my 66 yet. I’d guess they weren’t all that concerned about it back then though.
